Urban cycling: Behaviors and perceptions across the mobility ecosystem

Room 3 | 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm | Wednesday, February 28, 2024

As more and more Americans pick up cycling as not only a hobby but also a means of transportation, cities and fellow users of the road have had to evolve with them.

In an effort to understand the changing urban transportation landscape, OvationMR has conducted a two-phased study in eight major US cities. Blending quant and AI-driven qual, this study categorizes respondents into cyclists, drivers and pedestrians, exploring their perceptions and behaviors towards cycling. Key focus areas include the frequency of cycling, reasons for choosing cycling, attitudes towards cycling and cyclists, experiences with shared bicycle services, perceptions of safety and interactions between different road users. The study also evaluates satisfaction with the existing cycling infrastructure and identifies areas for improvement.

Key Takeaways:

  1. The varied motivations and frequencies of cycling among urban residents.
  2. Comparisons of how cyclists, drivers and pedestrians perceive each other and the shared urban space.
  3. Practical recommendations for enhancing the urban cycling infrastructure to be safer for all parties.
