Let me explain Black, again (new presentation!)

Room 3 | 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm | Monday, March 27, 2023

Since 2021, Pepper Miller has become a frequent presenter at The Quirk’s Event for her upbeat and insightful presentations.

With over 25 years of experience as a market researcher and Black American subject matter expert, Pepper shares foundational insights about Black culture from her new and third Black insights book, “Let Me Explain Black, Again.”

Pepper delves into the backstories and shares marketing and market research examples to help her audience understand the importance of language, beliefs and behaviors related to Black culture; how cultural shape shifting segments within this population are remarkably influential to and unapologetically different from mainstream (and from each other) in meaningful ways; what real inclusion, equality and celebration look like; how doing the work to understand “the why” about Black America, and why investing in this distinctive and desirable segment still matters — perhaps now more than ever.

Key takeaways:

  1. Black Americans are different from mainstream as citizens, consumers, and market research respondents, but different does not mean deficient.
  2. Black Americans are segmented as cultural shape shifters who influence and add value to mainstream culture as well as the Black community.
  3. Identity and Language are two key blind spots among business leaders and industry professionals:
    • Misunderstanding language of Black culture: “Yes, I speak English… but are you talking to me?”
    • Misunderstanding and misjudging Black identity: It intersects with authenticity and cultural pride and today has been repurposed to empower Black people and make a statement.
