Using insight at UKHSA to support people most impacted by health threats

This session introduces the Insight team at the UK Health Security Agency and provides an overview of the types of research that we carry out to support the agency’s decision-making. We will present a case study of recent research which aimed to bring to life the daily experiences and challenges of people experiencing homelessness, as one of the groups who are disproportionately impacted by external health threats. We will share how we used a narrative film output to convey people’s stories and why we chose this medium as a way to most effectively land this insight and ensure that an understanding of this population group was at the heart of future policy and intervention development. We will also share some of the main challenges we encountered while developing the film and how we overcame those.

Key takeaways:

  1. An understanding of the role of an insight team within a new government agency.
  2. Using creative ways to present research findings can work, even with scientific/academic stakeholders.
  3. Some considerations for storyboarding a narrative film from qualitative data.
